Oh! So, you are wondering about the ingredients, about the equipment, and about the process to make CBD oil at home!

And, why not? After all, extraction looks like a big industrial process, requiring big vessels, ovens, and many heavy machines and equipment.

And more, even if you learn about the process, what is the fun in making it at home, when it is so easily available in the market?

So, you are essentially asking about the benefits of making CBD Oil at home, ain’t you?

Why Make CBD Oil at Home?

Well, with a sudden influx of so many sellers offering CBD oil, you are never too sure about the purity and the quality of the oil. The sellers have to keep in mind multiple factors before bringing out a product.

Cost is one of the most critical factors in manufacturing a product. To keep the cost of the product in limits manufacturers may compromise with the quality and the proportion of different ingredients. Sometimes, they may even tweak the processing method to cut the cost of manufacturing.

Finally, some spurious brands may not even follow the standard operating procedures and can deviate from the standard parameters necessary to keep the required quality and purity of the product.

On the other hand, when you’re making CBD oil on your own you know what exactly is going in the product while preparing it. You can choose all the ingredients according to your requirements, process them to get the right quality, and all of this with 100% confidence in the purity of the oil.

Making the CBD oil at home may also be cheaper as compared to buying it from the store.

Moreover, there is a certain level of satisfaction that you get when you prepare a recipe or a product on your own.

Now, before going to the actual process we would share with you some important factors that would significantly impact the quality of your end product.

Important Factors

Selecting Hemp

Selecting the right ingredients is the most important factor in getting the right quality of CBD oil. Therefore, while making CBD oil at home, you should select the right type of hemp strains.

Different types of strains would have different percentages of cannabinoid compounds. Some strains would have a high percentage of THC while others would have higher CBD content. Select the hemp strains with high CBD content like Charlotte’s Web or Harle Tsu, etc.

Selecting Oil

Edible oils make a good solvent for the CBD oil extraction. You can use any edible oil for the purpose like Olive oil, Hemp Seed, or Coconut oil.

Carrier oil used for extraction transfers its healing properties too to the final product. For instance, Coconut oil has 80% healthy saturated fats comprising mainly of MCT.

MCT carries directly to the liver and acts as the energy booster. Moreover, being tasteless, MCT does not interfere with the flavor of the end product.

Olive oil is also said to be beneficial in many medical conditions like diabetes and heart-related ailments etc. Moreover, it provides a favorable taste to the final product.

Similarly, you can select any other carrier oil based on its properties and its synergy with CBD oil.

Food-grade Grain Alcohol

Food-grade grain alcohol is a plant-based solvent. It is one of the most efficient methods to extract oil-soluble compounds. It maintains the chemical ratio naturally available in the hemp flowers.

Ethanol also extracts chlorophyll that helps in raising the hemoglobin levels; however, it also transfers its grass-like taste into the product.

Cooking Time and Temperature

Yet another very important factor is the right time & temperature combination during the extraction process.

On the one hand, low heat may not properly decarb your hemp flower or extract rich CBD Oil, on the other hand, overcooking can devoid you of many essential nutrients and may also spoil the taste and texture of the CBD Oil.

Methods of Making CBD Oil at Home

Once we know about the important factors to consider while making CBD oil at home, we can move ahead learning about different methods of CBD oil extraction.

There are 3 different extraction methods to make CBD oil.

  • CO2 Extraction
  • Oil Based Extraction
  • Alcohol Based Extraction

CO2 Extraction

This method is suitable for mass production i.e. for the industrial level CBD oil extraction.

CO2 extraction method requires large-size processing equipment, large space, and trained & skillful manpower to supervise the entire process.

The quality of CBD oil through this process is excellent if all the standard operating procedures are strictly followed while keeping standard parameters within controlled limits.

However, this process is not viable for extracting small quantities of CBD oil and hence is not suitable for extracting CBD oil at home.

Oil Based Extraction

Oil based method is a simple way to extract CBD oil from the hemp flowers using natural oil like; olive oil, coconut oil, or any other edible oil.

In this extraction method, you do not need any additional utensils or other items. You can use your regular kitchen items to extract CBD oil by following a simple step by step method.

Ingredients

  • Hemp Flowers- Approx 50gm
  • Carrier Oil- Approx 800gm

Important Items

  • Baking Sheet
  • Herb Grinder or Trimming Knife
  • Oven
  • Double Boiler or Crackpot
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Strainers, like Coffee-filter or Cheesecloth
  • Glass Mason Jar

Procedure

Step 1

Grind or cut the hemp flowers using a knife in very fine, even pieces (not dust-like). Grinding or cutting hemp flowers in small pieces increases the yield of CBD oil extraction.

Step 2

Take the baking tray and spread these consistently ground hemp flowers on the tray. Ensure that the layer of spread flowers is not too thick to prevent uniform baking of the flowers.

Step 3

Keep the baking tray in the oven and heat the flowers to around 225 to 250ºF (Approx 110-120ºC) for 45min to an hour.

This is called decarboxylation. It converts CBDA present in the flowers into CBD. At the end of the process, the flowers turn brownish and a little crispy.

Low heat for longer duration ensures that the terpenes present in the hemp flowers are still intact after baking.

Step 4

Mix the baked flowers with the carrier oil.

Take the double boiler and fill some water in the bottom container. Place the mix of oil and baked flowers in the top container of the double boiler. Stir the mix with the spoon.

Heat it to a simmer to a temperature between 300 to 325ºF (Approx 150-160ºC) for around 2 to 3 hours. Temperature above this would cause terpenes present in the baked flowers to evaporate.

You don’t need to monitor it all through. Instead, you can just stir it every 25-30mins.

After 2 to 3 hours of indirect heating, the product would turn brownish-green.

Step 5

Remove the top container from the double boiler.

Get the Mason jar. Place the strainer over the glass jar and pour the blend into it. Squeeze the strainer fully to collect maximum oil into the glass jar.

Hurray! The first little batch of your homemade CBD Oil is ready for use

Close the Mason jar with the lid and store it in a cool & dry place.

Alcohol Based Extraction

This method is also commonly used to extract CBD oil. Like the oil based extraction process, this process is also very simple and does not need big equipment or vessels for extraction.

However, as Alcohol is a highly inflammable substance you must follow important safety precautions during the process.

Ingredients

  • Hemp Flowers- Approx 50gm
  • Food-grade Grain Alcohol

Important Items

  • Baking Sheet
  • Herb Grinder or Trimming Knife
  • Oven
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Wooden Spoon
  • 2 Containers
  • Sieve
  • Funnel
  • Strainers, like Coffee-filter or Cheesecloth
  • Double Boiler or Crackpot
  • Spatula

Procedure

Step 4

Take the mixing bowl. Transfer the baked flowers into the mixing bowl.

Pour the alcohol in the mixing bowl to fully submerge these flowers. Stir the mix of baked flowers and alcohol with the help of the wooden spoon for 3-5 minutes.

There is an important safety measure to be taken in this step.

(Do not use any mechanical devices to stir the mix. The device may produce heat and create sparks).

The process of stirring will leach out the flowers’ content like CBD and terpenes in the alcohol.

Step 5

Take the container. Put the sieve over the container and pour the solution into it. The collected solution after the filter would have a dark-green appearance. However, the solution would still have some small unfiltered flower particles in it.

Step 6

Take another container with a small mouth. Put the funnel over it and dress it with the strainer. Strain the solution through the filters to get a clear solution. You can also use some fresh alcohol for re-filtration.

Step 7

Take the double boiler and fill some water in the bottom container. Place the filtered solution on the top of the double boiler.

Heat the solution gently at low temperature. The purpose of heating the solution is to separate CBD from the alcohol through evaporation. Alcohol can evaporate even at low heat.

There is another important safety measure to be taken in this step.

(Alcohol vapors are produced during this heating process. These vapors are highly inflammable. Therefore, do not heat it over the naked flame else the vapors may catch fire).

Keep stirring the solution while heating. On complete evaporation, a highly viscous residue of CBD is left in the heating container. And that is your first mini-batch of alcohol based CBD Oil.

Collect it in a bottle or a syringe and store it in a dry and cool place.

Pros and Cons

Oil Based Extraction Pros

  • Carrier oils are very effective and gentle solvents and do not damage other compounds present in the hemp flower.
  • Additional benefits of specific carrier oil also transfer to the end product and add further to the health benefits.
  • Carrier oils do not leave any hazardous chemicals in the extraction process.
  • It tastes better than the alcohol based CBD oil.

Oil Based Extraction Cons

  • Edible oils do not have a longer shelf life thus CBD Oil extracted through this method too has a comparatively shorter shelf
  • CBD oil extracted through oil based extraction method is less potent than through the alcohol based extraction.

Alcohol Based Extraction Pros

  • It is a simple method not requiring any additional equipment.
  • CBD oil made through the alcohol based extraction process is more potent than oil based extraction.
  • It extracts even the chlorophyll from the flower which helps increase the hemoglobin in the blood.

Alcohol Based Extraction Cons

  • This process poses the risk of fire & explosion as alcohol is highly inflammable and the solution mixed with alcohol has to be heated over the flame. Moreover, vapors of alcohol released during the cooking make the process even riskier.
  • As the alcohol traces remain in the end product it may not be very safe for consumption.
  • Alcohol counters many of CBD benefits also. It destroys many important nutrients like terpenes, fats, and other substances. Besides, many impurities present in the hemp plant are also not fully removed.
  • Chlorophyll transfers a very bad grassy taste into the end product. Combined with alcohol, it further deteriorates and tastes bitter on consumption.

Final Words

Going through the process of extracting CBD oil at home, it is clear that not only is it possible to extract CBD at home but the process of extraction is also pretty simple. It does not call for any large or heavy equipment or any space other than your kitchen area.

Moreover, you are fully aware of the ingredients that go inside the product and therefore, would always be assured of the purity of the end product.

Both the methods of CBD oil extraction at home have their respective advantages and disadvantages. However, Oil based extraction has some definite advantages over the alcohol based extraction process.

Having said, there is no substitute for the industrial method of CO2 extraction. CBD oil processed through this method is highly potent & pure.

Therefore, for the long term medical purpose you should prefer the industrial CBD oil through a reliable online brand and make sure to use coupon code before making the purchase.
